Splish, Splosh, Sundays

– Relaxed and enjoyable swimming classes for babies from 6 weeks (N11)

metm9.gifButterfly, breast-stroke or doggy paddle. What’s your favourite style? Give your tot a head-start in the swimming stakes – and get ready for your break in the Winter Sun – with Ann’s Swimming Club.

Tots from 6 weeks old enjoy being in the water – and you (or your partner) will too. The weekly 30 minutes classes go by in a flash as you dance and swim to different nursery rhymes all the while learning important lessons for the water-borne. You’ll love watching your tot learn to hold on to the bar. Or thrill to see your little one under water. (Babies are excellent swimmers due to their diving reflexes.) The relaxed atmosphere and Ann’s wise and caring manner make this an excellent place to learn (and to have fun!).

The new term has started so contact Ann on  07885 027 489  to arrange for your little butterfly to get some wings.

Classes are on Sunday mornings at St John’s Primary School, Crescent Road, Friern Barnet N11 3LB (where the North Circular makes for easy access) and cost £56 for a term (exact price may vary depending on the length of the term) or £10 for an individual session. Times depend on your tot’s age.

What Mini says:
I’m a natural, darling, a real water baby.

Little Knocks

metm141– Soft Play Areas Across London

Life. It can be pretty unpredictable. No sooner are you convinced that Spring is here, than there’s a cold snap. No sooner are you’re ready to leave for the park than it starts to rain. Leaving you to find a fun way to entertain Junior,  and burn off some of that excess energy (his, obviously). You might as well be knocking your head against a brick wall.

Don’t be soft! Simply click onto’s listing of Softplay Areas across London for venues offering indoor fun, endless excitement and an outlet for the frenetic energy of your little bruiser. We know you’re a bit of a softie, so we’ve made sure that all venues offer a separate area for babies and toddlers – so you won’t need to worry about older kids knocking the wind out of your little one’s sails.

From Kensington to Croydon, Wembley to Wimbledon, we’ve got it covered. Plus, for those willing to travel a little further afield, we’ve ventured beyond the M25. Only by a few miles mind.

Click here to see our listing of London’s Soft Play and Indoor Adventure Zones, and those Further Afield.

And at least your afternoon won’t be one for the school for hard knocks.

What Mini says:

Knock, knock …

Please note that the softplay areas listed on our directory have not all been reviewed by our London mums and babies, so we’d love to hear what you think of a specific soft play zone – leave a comment below or send us a note to mail [at] Also, if we’ve missed a spot, let us know, and we’ll include it.

Sheer Brilliance

metm44– Cafe and Arts Centre for Smart Tots (NW10)

Although she’d never admit it publicly – except of course to my daddy, grandparents and well, almost everyone stopping to coo over my good looks – deep down my mummy knows that I’m brilliant.

She’s a bright spark too, my mummy. It was her cleverness that led us to Brilliant Kids Cafe and Art Centre in Kensal Rise.

Serving wholesome, hearty and healthy meals with lots of choices for me and mummy, the cafe offers a relaxed environment for mummy to catch up while I assert my intellectual prowess over my friends. There is plenty of space for us and bags of toys too. (And for those glorious days when the sun lights up a brilliant blue sky, there are outdoor tables in the garden.)

After lunch, another facet of my brilliance shines brightly in the wonderful classes. I love the Picasso class, which is perfect for a Master like me. (Or the collage class which brings out my inner Matisse.)

This is the place to go to assert that you’re the smartest kid on the block. Just make sure it’s not my block.

What Moi says:

I’m all about building a healthy sense of self esteem.

Brilliant Kids Cafe & Arts Centre is at 7 – 8 Station Terrace, Kensal Rise, London, NW10 5RT (Tel.   020 8964 4120  ). It’s open Monday to Friday from 8am to 6pm and on Saturday from 9am to 5pm.

More MAG than WAG …

Excellent footie classes across London

You’ve traded in your perfect nails and ‘It bag’ for shorts and a change bag (it’s designer, but still …). These days you’re more MAG (Mother And Gurgler) than WAG.

But that doesn’t mean that you won’t be seen on the sidelines, cheering on your little pro.

Little Kickers is just the start every future footie fan (or champion) needs.

A fun, fast and physical 45 minutes spent in the care of excellent coaches who will bend the rules to teach your tot colours, or the difference between fast and slow. It all ends in a breathtaking finale as tot after tot kicks a ball into the goal. ‘Whoa!’ roars the crowd.

With classes zigzagging across London – think Ealing to Earls Court, Borehamwood to Bayswater, you’re sure to find a convenient location. (Encourage the other footie fan in your life to participate on Sunday mornings, freeing you up for that all-important manicure …)

Places fill up fast (there’s a 3 month waiting list in some areas), so register soon to ensure Junior’s career is on track.

But what’s next for you? Designing jeans? A perfume line?

What Mini says:

*Sigh* Now Mummy, that’s Offside.

Little Kickers offer classes for children aged 18months +. Check out the website for further details and to find a class near you.

Post Script: Don’t be put off by the somewhat unfortunate manner of the Reception Staff. Footie’s a rough game and you’ll need to toughen up a bit. Once you get to the class, it will be worth every minute of hard slog.

Face the Music!

– Original music and movement classes for tots aged 0-4 (SW11 & SW12)

Join in the fun and frolics at Fruity Tunes where a combination of traditional nursery rhymes and original compositions make for a lively and energetic class.

Tots are made to feel right at home with a welcome song. Then it’s straight onto singing and dancing, as mini movers ‘n shakers join in with movements to the songs or use their own moves! And with puppets and musical instruments for all to try, the classes are interactive and educational – music to a Mum’s ears!

After singing and dancing up a storm, the session ends in a flurry of bubbles.

From start to finish, it’s in a class of its own.

And if Mini is hooked on the catchy songs, don’t wait a whole week to face the music! Enjoy the Fruity Tunes CD at home and in the car. (Take a listen here.)

What Mini says:

Now that’s worth the song and dance!

Get Your House in Order

– Superb music classes for babies and toddlers

You’re totally focused on getting Junior’s name down at all the right schools, but when it comes to the little maestro’s musical education, you haven’t hit the right note.

Fear not! The Music House for Children runs excellent music classes for babies and toddlers (from 0 – 4 years). The teachers’ love of music is imparted with sensitivity and caring – allowing the participants to revel in the thrill of opening a flute case, and interpreting notes through dance and movement. And the classes’ creativity and imagination sparks lots of excitement: suddenly a bag of satin ribbons comes alive wriggling worms!

Listening to real instruments is a welcome change, and it’s wonderful to enjoy the tots’ excitement, laying the groundwork for a lifetime of music appreciation.

After all, it’s time you got your (musical) house in order.

What Mini says:
Next stop, the Royal Albert Hall. I’ll bring the house down!

Classes are drop-in and are held each weekday morning at venues in Shepherd’s Bush, Notting Hill and Queen’s Park. For details of your nearest class, contact The Music House for Children on 020 89322652 or via e-mail at is the ultimate review site for London mums, babies and toddlers.
