At Full Stretch

metm21– Mum & Baby Yoga Classes in SW11

It’s a sad truth that not by any stretch of the imagination is your pre-baby figure going to reappear without some work.

But rather than a full on military style workout, stretch the rules at Battersea Yoga where Nadia will have you back in shape and feeling fabulous in no time.  The one hour class will put you through an effective and strong postnatal yoga routine which will leave you feeling revitalized, relaxed and rejuvenated.

Then, on the strength of a world famous back catalogue of nursery rhymes, Junior is put through his paces where you help him stretch his legs (and arms!) and indulge him in some Mummy and Tot bonding baby massage.

After his big work out, the little one is guaranteed to nod off on the home stretch.

What Mini says:

At a stretch, I’m up for it.

You are ready for post natal yoga after your six week check-up. Nadia’s post natal classes are held on Mondays and Wednesdays at St Vincents Hall, 36 Altenburg Gardens SW11 1JJ. The new term starts 5th January / 7th January and the course costs £168 for 14 classes. To book, email Nadia on is the ultimate review site for London mums, babies and toddlers. Having It All

– Fab new spa for mums and mums-to-be

Motherhood. It’s all you ever wanted. Then you turn around and realise what you’ve given up.* Sure, you’ve gained so much (and then some) but you’ve also lost the quiet time. And me-time (After all, we’re all about a little bit of Moi too).

Cheers!Well, with Cupcake you can have it all. Yes, that nascent narcissist can re-assert herself. A private members club and spa for mums and mums-to-be, Cupcake is a stylishly decorated and calming space. Offering classes for mums (and mums and babies), seminars by fitness experts and flirt-ologists and spa treatments – all while your little sweet treat is being taken care of in the crèche. And, did we mention plenty of me-time too (perhaps in the café or one of their other spaces.)

Now that’s having it all. It’s called having your (cup)cake, and eating it too!

What Mini says:

All-encompassing. All-consuming. That’s me too.

Membership to Cupcake includes all classes and costs £125 per month. Cupcake Mum is at Riverside Quarter, Point Pleasant, Wandsworth Park SW18 1GG Tel.   020 8875 1065

* (Without being too earnest, we’ll add, not that it’s not worth every sacrifice.)

Magic Realism at Maggie & Rose

– A Member’s Club for the Family (W8 )

metm5.jpgIn London, memberships are everything. Entry to the best places and access to great networks. So, where does a family find membership that brings with it a stylish environment with excellent classes and lovely local families? At Maggie & Rose, a dream come true for mum (and mini too).

In this beautifully renovated home away from home, members can enjoy the quiet café for coffee mornings, weekend brunches or just catching your breath (and there’s wifi – so you can catch other things too), play in the bright and spacious soft play area or snuggle up on a beanbag for a movie. There’s an inspired selection of classes for tots and mums. (Members receive discounts on classes, and on their legendary children’s parties.)

We attended the Cheflets class for 12 – 18 month olds in the specially designed kitchen. The little Jamie (Oliver) prepared a gorgeous fruit crumble, under careful guidance. He enjoyed the tactile experience of adding ingredients and mixing the crumble. And putting his hand right into the dish once constructed. Classes are kept small and the supervision is excellent.

Membership at Maggie & Rose – a magical thing, really.

What Mini says:
A members club for mini’s. Genius. Daddy’s praying to be admitted to some club in St James so why shouldn’t I start early?

Maggie and Rose, 58 Pembroke Road, Kensington, W8 6NX (outside the congestion zone) and only a ten minute walk from the Kensington High Street or Earl’s Court tubes. Open 7 days a week from 9am to 5pm. For details on membership (which costs £400 a year) and to learn more about the club and classes, see the website or call 020 7371 2200. is the ultimate review site for London mums, babies and toddlers. Try yoga

– Yoga classes at Triyoga

We know, in your pre-baby life you never stopped to breath, let alone take a yoga class. Life as a new mummy is somewhat similar. Except now you can take the yoga class and entertain the tot at the same time. So don’t just breath, sigh with relief.

metm9.gifTriyoga runs Mummy and Me Yoga classes (for babies from 6 weeks until crawling) on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The classes are popular – with no limit on the size of the class – so arrive early to stake out your mat. You’ll do a number of stretches and poses that will help make you relax and feel more human and then spend time bonding with your baby. You’re free to feed, change or cuddle your baby at any time during the class, making this a very relaxed and happy place.

Go on. It’s time to get that asana in gear (and those lungs functioning again). It’s worth a try.

Classes are on Tuesdays from 11 – 12:30 and Thursdays from 10 – 11.15. Triyoga, 6 Erskine Road, Primrose Hill, NW3 3AJ, Tel. 020 7483 3344

What Mini says:
Personally, I don’t have a problem with my lung capacity.

Life’s Lessons

metm21.JPGIf yoga was a competitive sport, the Life Centre would win hands down. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to live in Notting Hill – suddenly all that pre-mummy competitive blood starts coursing through your veins.

Until you’ve done the Mummy and Baby Yoga Class, that is. After the class, you’ll find yourself calm, collected and ready for World Peace – thoroughly contented with your lot in life. (Lesson learned – Good sports are winners too.)

At the Life Centre, they’ve thought about your mummy and baby needs. Ahead of time. Park your bugaboo on old mats that are lined up on the studio floor. Yoga mats (in good condition) are set up, each with a clean and fresh towel. The class is lead by the lovely Tara Lee who takes mums through stretches and yoga poses which not only help relieve tension, they entertain the little yogini too. After a good work-out, plenty of time is spent exercising and enjoying baby. (Lesson learned – Preparation pays off.)

And afterwards you’ll be breathing well and ready for that 100m sprint to your car … seconds ahead of that pesky little parking attendant. (Lesson learned – A stitch in time (or on your left side) saves nine(ty quid).)

Classes are on a Monday from 11:30 to 12:45 and at £12 per session, this is not just a lesson in tranquility and deep breathing, it teaches about real quality and the value of money. The Life Centre, 15 Edge Street, London W8 7PN, tel. 020 7221 4602.

Child’s Pose – What Mini says:
I’m not sure what happened at yoga, but once we left she was unusually calm. She even smiled at a parking attendant. (Lesson
learned – A picture is worth a thousand words.)

Oh, and as we left I’m sure we saw Kate Moss parked outside …

Is your New Mummy pushy?

If boot-camp with a stroller is her thing, and admittedly that’s a pretty big “IF,” then Pushy Mothers may motivate your new mummy. It’s certainly not for everyone.

My mummy and I joined Pushy Mothers at Kenwood House and rather foolishly – I blame it on sleep deprivation – signed up for a course of 4 sessions before testing her mettle. Her enthusiasm is endearing. She never was one for exercise before my birth so who did she think she was kidding? My arrival may have changed a lot of things. It has not made her an exercise-junkie who energetically pushes me round the park while periodically doing squats or sit-ups when so instructed by an out-and-out pushy woman. The sessions (we managed a total of 2) last an hour each and provide an excellent work-out, no baby-sitter required. So, if your mummy plans to hit the slopes this season, this may be the solution.

As all babies know, the species of pushy mothers is not indigenous to North London. In South and West London, your NM may prefer the more subtly-named Buggy Fit

Pushy Mothers is in 14 parks in North London. See Pushy Mothers. Four sessions cost ₤20 plus ₤15 registration. Trials cost ₤5.

What Moi says – Who doesn’t like exercise? Not Moi! I’ve always been a fan of a good spectator sport …
