Marzipan Madness

– DIY Fun for the Family

metmx_22decYou will need:

Red, Yellow and Green food colouring

To Make Marzipan Snowmen:

  • Break a large piece of marzipan into quarters.  Then put each quarter into a small bowl.
  • Add a drop of red food dye to one of the quarters and mix it until the marzipan is red.
  • Mix green dye into one quarter and yellow into another.  Don’t mix dye into the last quarter.
  • Roll some of the plain marzipan into a ball for the snowman’s body.   Roll a smaller ball for the head and press it on top.
  • Roll a ball of red marzipan for the hat.  Press it flat and add a tiny red ball on top.
  • Roll a sausage from the red marzipan and wrap it around the snowman’s neck for a scarf.

To Make Marzipan Presents:

  • For a present, roll a ball of red marzipan. Press the flat side of a knife down on the ball.
  • Turn the ball on its side and press it with the knife again.  Do this until the ball becomes a cube.
  • Do the same with a ball of yellow marzipan.
  • Roll sausages of green marzipan and press them onto the cubes on each side so it looks like a ribbon.  Add loops for a bow.

All the way to Oxbridge, Baby!

metm111– DVD to aid babies in early communication

The little genius in your arms has his future determined for him: the finest nursery and a highly pedigreed education (of course, his name has been down at all the right places since conception). In your eyes, all paths lead to Oxbridge

Indulge your competitive urgings and give the future Nobel laureate a head start with the Learn to Talk DVD by Oxbridge Baby.

Perhaps not the most glamourous gift he’ll receive, the academic credentials are all there. And Junior’s will be too.

metmx_19decGood quality and simple imagery allow baby brains to focus on the important message, and a clever combination of sounds, music, visual stimulation and basic sign language will introduce your little grad to different vocabulary as he learns to say his first words.

What Mini says:

Which, of course, will be ‘A first at Oxbridge, Baby.’

Learn to Talk by Oxbridge Baby (SSP £12.99 with free UK p&p) is available from the Oxbridge Baby website. We’ve included a copy in each of our Christmas Bootie Hampers. is the ultimate review site for London mums, babies and toddlers. Up The Garden Path – BONUS Prize in our Bootie Hamper

– JoJoMaman BébéGarden Scene Baby Gym – for an idyllic festive season

metmx_16decBeing passed around the relatives for the traditional Christmas cuddle can be enough to drive you up the wall. Thankfully, this year I’ve worked on a strategy to escape the coo-ing and clutching, and indulge in a little “me” time.

While you all laze around after your long lunch, I’ll be getting active, stretching out and kicking around with the garden bugs in my new baby gym.  There’s nothing of the garden variety about it.

And the Christmas visitors will be thrilled as I regale them with my musical show using the gym jingles … it certainly beats what’s on the box.

Later, the guests can kick back with the mince pies, while I tuck into the teethers and test the textures of the different fabrics.  I won’t be the one worrying about whether my bum looks big in my New Year’s party frock!

A Matter of Perspective

– Clever new books tell same tale for boys and girls

metmx_17_1decThe battle of the sexes, it seems, starts early. Leaving aside the chromosome argument (xx, xy – it’s all too complicated), if there’s any truth in the tale, it starts with a make-up of very different ingredients. And now you can choose a tale to match your tot’s constitution, be it puppy dogs tails or sugar and spice.

Not that we’re getting all Mars and Venus on you. Or Harry and Sally. We’re talking Oscar meets Maggie.

The imaginative and multi-talented creators of our favourite family club, Maggie & Rose, have turned their hand to publishing a single book, but with a choice of your hero’s gender. How post-modern!

Both are beautifully illustrated and tell the same tale.

Boys will love the action-packed adventure in which our hero Oscar and his faithful canine companion Bentley save the day in a charmingly boy-sterous tale.

metmx_17_2decAnd little girls will love the (Maggie &) Rose-tinted version with sugar, spice and all things nice.  Think afternoon teas and girly fun.

Of course, there’s nothing stopping you from mixing things up a little and buying both books. Now that’s an interesting perspective!

What Mini says:

Perspective? You should try seeing the world from down here.

Maggie & Rose’s new books (SSP £10 each) are available from their website. Aimed at a slightly older child, the books make the perfect present for an older friend – or put one on your tot’s bookshelf for the future.

Enter our Christmas Bootie competition and you could win one of each version!

Who’s The Daddy?

– The perfect present for Daddy from the Apple of his Eye

metmx_12decEveryone knows that the element of surprise is important in every relationship.  But the exception to the rule has to be Christmas. Which is why you wisely left your present list in your partner’s wallet (and an extra copy in his jeans pocket, coat pocket and, of course, emailed it to him as well just to be doubly sure that he’s under no illusions).

But what do you get for The Big Daddy?

How about a soul mate in the form of Dad Rules by Andrew Clover – The Times’ Style Magazine columnist.

With anecdotes that will make you smile, cringe and laugh out loud, this book is as warming as mulled wine on a cold winter’s evening.  The very antithesis to those parenting books full of strict rules and regulations, Daddy will rejoice in the knowledge that there really are no hard and fast rules and that mischief, fun, games and mess really are key to being the best Dad. Now that’s a relief!

So this Christmas, it’s time to bend the rules and let Daddy rule the roost.metm162

What Mini says:

Now that’s Daddy cool!

Dad Rules by Andrew Clover (SSP £14.99) is available in all good bookshops and online.
